Rumney 2nds Unbeaten run comes to an end

Saturday saw a very busy but very welcome day for the club with 4 sides at home for the first time in many years. The seconds hosted Barry II’s, again, the first occasion for many seasons. From the kick off the visitors looked settled and took play to the Rumney 22. They sent the ball wide and a kick ahead by the Barry no.10 saw him pick up and go in for a try, which he also converted to give Barry an early 7point lead. This spurred Rumney into action and they powered up field with No8 Shane Young, flanker Josh Bridson and second row Sean Murphy to the fore. Poor handling let them down however and Barry took advantage to move into the home half. A disjointed Rumney were slow to react as a Barry kick and chase saw another try, unconverted, to put the visitors further ahead. Barry looked more eager and united and sustained pressure on the Rumney line saw their No 8. Crash over for a try converted by their No10.tosee halftime arrive with the visitors ahead by 19 points to nil.
Barry started the second half in the same vein as the first, pouncing on a breakdown in the Rumney backs. Their outside half picked up and sprinted over for a try, which he also converted to put the visitors 26 points clear. Too late Rumney at last started to play as a team and took play into the Barry half. From a ruck Nathan Perks and Lawrence Facey combined to move play into the Barry 22m area. From the breakdown, No 8 Shane Young powered over from close to touchdown for an unconverted try. Rumney spent the last quarter camped in the Barry half but could not break down a solid Barry defence. The final whistle came with a 26 - 5 victory to the visitors - a result that a disappointing home side could not complain about.
