2nds v St Joseph’s 2nd

The second’s game against the Joes at Blackweir was unfortunately subject to passive scrums as the hosts apparently had no front row available.

From the start the Joes moved the ball swiftly along the line and only a superb cover tackle by flanker Anthony Leach halted their progress. Rumney broke out of their 22 but holding on in a tackle resulted in a penalty to the hosts slotted by their centre to put them 3 points ahead. From the restart Rumney were put under pressure but a good break by fullback Christian Edwards took him to the halfway mark. St Joseph’s gained possession from the breakdown and their pacy backs took play back to the Rumney 22m line. Only a great tackle by Christian Edwards stopped the attack in its tracks. Unfortunately another transgression saw a second penalty awarded to the hosts to put them 6points clear. Rumney were looking disjointed but a good clearance by Edwards took play to the St Joseph’s 22m line. Rumney gained possession from the line out and prop Harry Jarrett and second row Josh Dean set up a driving maul from which  flanker Shane Young  burst away to dive over in the corner for an unconverted try. Rumney’s joy was short lived however as the hosts forced their way up field and poor discipline saw them awarded a third penalty. Their centre duly converted from in front of the posts to take the score to 9 points to 5 in their favour. Rumney needed to up their game and the forwards made good yards with Jon De Lloyd, Andrew Davies, Josh Dean and Ryan Fenton prominent. Outside half Nathan Perks grew in confidence and made some promising half breaks but poor passing saw them founder. A frustrating 4th penalty saw St Joseph’s reach half time leading by 12points to 5.

Rumney made a number of changes to start the second half and replacement wing Jake Sutton was immediately put to the test as he made a try saving tackle in the corner. A good passage of play followed with forwards Andrew Davies, Ryan Griffiths, and Mathew Davies all involved. Centres Dan Griffiths and Alex Bodin proved solid in defence replacement fullback Richie Moir put in some big relieving clearances. Sadly Rumney , with time slipping away, lost focus and St Josephs , always willing to spread the ball, put their right wing John Lewis away on a jinking, sidestepping run to touch down near the posts for a converted try that took the final score to 19 points to 5 in St Joseph’s favour.
